Grade 1 Butterflies

You are here: Faculty & Curriculum > Class Information > Grade 1 > Butterflies

First grade started the school year with a unit in science called "How Animals Grow". We watched caterpillars eat their milkweed, form a J-shape, then a chrysalis. Then one morning we came to school to see the butterflies had emerged from the chrysalis. We released them outside so they could begin their migration to Mexico.

Books read.

We read books about caterpillars and butterflies.

Caterpillars

After we worked with patterns in math class, we designed our own caterpillars and wrote what we thought they'd eat.

Monarch life cycle diagrams.

We made a life cycle diagram of how the monarch butterfly grew.

Journal of our observations.
We watched the caterpillars each day. We drew and wrote down what was happening in our monarch journals.
Our butterflies.
We made these beautiful monarchs.
Boys vs. girls (even in the butterfly world!)
We used tally marks to keep track of how many boy and girl butterflies emerged. Then we made a graph in math class.
